Rotational Light Painting

By Dan on January 16, 2015 10:43 AM

I recently bought a gimbal and have been using it in conjunction with long-exposure to do rotational light painting pictures.   Here is one from my first session with Theresa Lopez.  Click into it and see a few more that we made that night!

These are all done in-camera in a single shot while rotating the camera along the optical axis.

Light Painting Cat

By Dan on December 18, 2014 2:56 PM

Cat is my new housemate.  And what better way to kick that off than to dress up for a party and do a shoot?

This is all done in-camera with a fiber optic light painting from Jason Page.

Light Painting Kenzie

By Dan on December 03, 2014 10:38 AM

Last night I shot with Kenzie and we created some beautiful abstract pieces.  Check out the light painting gallery for ten shots but enjoy these three to get you started...

Water Light Painting

By Dan on November 28, 2014 10:20 AM

Tarena asked me to come shoot with her and a few other models this past week.  She had access to a house with an indoor pool and we were going to shoot with water!  I built a huge box periscope so that I could attempt underwater shots without actually having an underwater housing for my camera.  The notion of underwater light painting was too appealing to pass up  When actually put to the test my periscope, labor of love that it was, only last a short while.  It may be resurrected at some point in the future with lessons learned.

After that we shifted to light painting with a tripod set up on the side of the pool.  We shot on two separate days and created some amazingly unique images!  Big thanks to Diana, Tarena, Shannon, Adriana, Jamie, and Dawn for modeling and to Justin for making the house available.  Here is one of the shots, the rest are in my light painting gallery.   The rest, other than the money shot that will be revealed as part of the project that Tarena, Dawn, and Shannon have been working on for a year!

Taylor, Light Painting

By Dan on November 26, 2014 11:37 AM

I had an opportunity to shoot with Taylor recently before she packs up and moves out of town.  We got to try some neat new techniques.  Here are two shots from the shoot!

Halloween Self Portrait

By Dan on November 19, 2014 10:14 AM

Theresa and I assumed Dia de los Muertos style for Halloween this year.  After walking around Boulder for a bit we decided we needed to immortalize the look in the studio.  Theresa did her own makeup, Cassandra did mine.  We did the photo ourselves with nobody else helping.

This shot was done in four separate lighting moments within a single exposure.  Theresa and I were not exposed within the image together simultaneously, each of us were lit independently by the other.

Amy Kresse, Secret Music

By Dan on November 19, 2014 9:59 AM

I got to shoot with fellow Canadian Amy Kresse a little while ago.  She has a wonderful story and has released a new album to accompany it.  She wanted to do a light painting shot for the cover about releasing her music, her magic, into the world.  This shot is what we came up with.  Her manager put the text on there but otherwise this image is as-shot.

You can check out her site and music at http://amykressmusic.com/

Denver Broncos Logo Light Painting Mosaic

By Dan on September 11, 2014 9:43 AM

Last night I took my first shot at making a light painting mosaic.   This is a 9x6 grid with 20 black tiles and 34 individually light painted tiles that weren't manipulated in any way other than being cropped and assembled.  I'm a huge hockey fan too and the Avs logo may be next!

Each individual tile was made with a long exposure shot while waving lights through the air to 'draw' that image.  After each tile was shot they were assembled on a computer but that's the only part of this that a computer touched!

Light Painting with Venus DeMars

By Dan on August 11, 2014 6:52 PM

I shot this light painting piece with Venus DeMars two nights ago after she opened for Against Me in Fort Collins.  Thanks to Venus for an amazing presence and to Theresa for assisting on this shot.  More from this night to come!

I had a few friends over last night and we were playing around with light painting and reflections.  Here is one of the best shots from the night!
